Whew!  We made it through Christmas.  Now here comes the New Year.  All of us here at MSC hope your holiday was filled with joy and good health.  Main Street Chiropractic and Wellness Center has a lot of great things in store for you in the new year.  We are promoting a "Get Your Health Back Again in 2010" program.  Starting in January, we are encouraging everyone to lose those pounds we may have put on these past few months.  January 17th thru the 23rd is National Healthy Weight Week.  All week long we will be performing Adrenal Stress Tests, Toxicity Screenings and tests for damage to the nervous system.

Prolonged emotional, chemical and physical stressors on the body can adversely affect the performance of the adrenal glands.  They are resonsible for many of the bodies hormone levels.  When the adrenals are stressed, they may not secrete the proper levels of these hormones.  One of which is cortisol.  Improper levels of cortisol may lead to weight gain.  It is also one of the reasons why a person may have that spare tire around the abdomen.

We are also subject to tens of thousands of chemicals every week.  They are in the air we breathe, the water we drink (think flouride for example) and the foods we eat (can you even pronounce some of the ingredients on those packages?)  For some of us, this is more than we can eliminate from our bodies,  As a result, we build up toxic waste dumps in our bodies.  Since our body is ALWAYS  trying to heal and protect itself, the body lays down fat to protect the vital organs from those chemicals.  Therefore, people who are toxic gain weight.  Unless these areas are addressed, you will not be able to lose weight.

Due to childhood falls, slips on the snow or ice, car accidents, work injuries or other traumas, our nervous system becomes damaged.  When our nervous system is damaged, it may affect our metabolism.  When our metabolism is slowed down, we gain weight.

According to the lastest National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 72.9% of the US population is overweight, obese or extremely obese and one of the fastest growing segments of the population is the country's youth.   According to research, people who are overweight or obese have higher risk factors for coronary heart disease, Type II diabetes, various cancers, HBP, stroke, sleep apnea (which I am seeing more and more of in my office), ostearthritis and gynecological problems.

During healthy weight week, all of these screenings will be done at out expense.  That's right, there is no charge at all.  It is our way of providing answers for so many people who need just a little help with their health.  Some of them are very easy,  fast and inexpensive too.  Some may take a little longer but in the long run, the more weight you lose, the healthier you will be.

In February, we will be doing Doctor's With A Heart in conjunction with Curves.  For the entire month we will be collecting donations for the... DUE TO THE CURRENT SITUATION IN

HAITI, WE WILL BE TAKING

DONATIONS FOR THE HATIAN RELIEF

FUND  SPCA.  Everyone who refers a new patient in the month of Feb. will get a chance to win a flat screen TV.  All new patients will also have the opportunity to win!  We gave one of these away last Christmas and it was a big hit.  Even if you are not currently a patient at MSC, you can get a chance to win.  In addition, you can get the health screenings described above for the donation.  It will be a great time to help out a worthy cause and do something good for your health.

I am also going back out on the speaking circuit.  I have worked on new material to bring you the latest in health care.  Beginning in Feb, I will be providing adult education seminars at the Spring Ford and Perk Valley School Districts.  Look for your program in the mail.  You can contact the school districts or MSC for a list of the topics, dates, times and locations.

If you belong to an organization, club or business that is interested in health talks, I have opened my schedule.  As a member of the Foundation For Wellness Professionals, I do volunteer work providing the community with these seminars at my expense.  Contact the office for details and to get me scheduled for you group.

Want to save lots of $$$$$ next year?????

Studies show that people who use chiropractic care have lower overall healthcare costs than those who don't.

THIS IS HUGE

In a study done at the School of Business Administration, Oakland University, Rochester, Mi. a comparason between patients who have received chiropractic care for common neuromucsculoskeletal disorders with those treated solely by medical and osteopathic physicians found that  nearly one fourth of patients were treated by chiropractors.  Those patients experienced significantly lower healthcare costs as represented by third party payments in the fee-for-service sector.  Total cost differences on the order of $1,000 over the 2 year period were found in the total sample of paitients as well as in subsamples of patients with specific disorders.  These preliminary results suggest a significant cost-saving potential for users of chirppractic care.  The results also suggest the need to reexamine insurance practices and programs that restrict chiropractic coverage relative to medical coverage.

FIND THIS AT: www.riskandandinsurance.com

"Pilot study finds chiropractic care, physical therapy may reduce health care costs"

The findings come from a one year pilot program designed by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield to measure patient quality of care.  Researchers concluded that significant clinical outcomes and healthcare cost reduction were arttributable to the use of chiropractic and other physical medicine services.

December:

WOW! What a year it has been.  I am amazed at how fast this year has gone.  I am really looking forward to 2010.  Big breakthroughs in research supporting chiropractic.  Did you see the story on Good Morning America where the "latest research" shows that chiropractic care has proven to lower people's blood pressure by up to 17 points?  Simply amazing.  Not the results of the study but, the fact that it was on national news.  Research is catching up with what we have been doing clinically and saying for the past 114 years.  More importantly, these findings can no longer be silenced. The United States healthcare system is still a mess.  "Insurance for all" is not going to fix it either.  I am not a pessimist, rather a realist.  When we as a nation realize that we must become more proactive when it comes to our health, then we will truly begin to see health care reform.  Here at MSC, we are committed as ever to help as many people as possible change their lives.  During the month of December any existing patient that refers a friend or family member (I know that everyone reading this knows at least 5 people they care about who are suffering form some sort of health related problem who can benefit from a consultation in our office) for a new patient exam is eligible for a chance to win a SOLE Elliptical machine.  It is the latest model and can be a key component for anyone in their quest to "Be healthy again in 2010".  Any new patient that comes in for an exam during the month of December is also in the running.   Call today to schedule your free health and wellness consultation to see if you have a problem that may benefit from our care.

As the year comes to an end, I look forward to the endless possibilities of helping to make our community the healthiest it can be in the upcoming year.  Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you or a loved one.  This is also a time of reflection on the blessings of 2009.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have entrusted us with you and your family's health this past year.  We consider it an honor and privilege to be the health care providers you depend on to help you with your most precious natural resource, your health.

The open house on the 14th was a big success.  Patients old and new came out to kick off our year long celebration of our 20th anniversary.  I look forward to serving the community for at least another 20 more.

IT'S A PARTY!

November 9-14 We will begin our year long 20th Anniversary Party.  Yes, that's right Main Street Chiropractic opened it's doors 20 years ago on November 21st 1990.  I can't believe where the time has gone.  After changing the lives of thousands of people for the better in the community, it still seems like only yesterday...  it is impossible because I am still so young...  Anyway, all week long we will be doing free screenings and consultations for anyone who comes in the door.  During the week, each new person coming to Main Street who consults with the doctor will receive one chance to win a beautiful Sole E25 Elliptical machine.  For our existing patients, this is a great opportunity to get those family members checked for subluxations.  Get your childern checked so they don't grow up and have the same health problems you suffer from.  OK, ok, we will even check your neighbors, friends and coworkers too.  For each person you refer to MSC, you will receive 2 chances to win the elliptical.

On Saturday, November 14th from 11 am -3 pm, there will be fun things for the kids to do as well as food for everyone.  Here's a run down.  We will have pretzels and hot dog pretzels from the Pretzel Factory, a cotton candy machine, veggie trays and lemonade.  There will be a ring toss and bean bag toss for the toddlers as well as a basketball toss for the older children.  We will have a coloring contest too.  There will be Game Stop gift cards and Main Street Chiropractic T shirts as prizes.  Beverly our massage therapist will be on hand providing free chair massages.  Beverly has been with us for a while and has already developed a large following as her talented hands have put many a muscle spasm to rest.  Throughout the day, Dave Scully, our resident acupuncturist will be doing live demonstrations and explaining the benefits of acupuncture.  He is a talented healer whom I have had the privilege of experiencing his services.  If it is done correctly, you don't feel a thing.  Come Saturday to learn the 3 major causes of all diseases, and find out if: you are vulnerable to them, they are already affecting you and what you can do about getting rid of these dangerous factors.  It is going to be another great day at MSC!

Feb. 23, 2009

Where does the time go????? Time has gotten by me so quickly.  I am amazed that I have not updated you for several months. I got the frame off my leg Dec. 10th 2008 after 2 years of  wearing the cage around my leg and it seems to have helped.  Finally, the tibia is healed.  Now the next step is to get my foot and ankle back in motion.  As a result of bring off my foot for almost 4 years, My foot and ankle have lost a lot of motion and guess what?  I now have contractures of the flexor tendons (think curling your toes and "arthritis" in my ankle.  Sound familiar.  Now I know what most of you are saying, "he's getting up there in age, it's normal to have arthritis".  Baloney,  I don't have it in my other ankle and they are both the same age.  It is due to loss of function and motion just like the arthritis people get in their spines.  Common maybe but, normal...NO WAY! Due to the fact that our spines are subject to a lot of abuse on a daily basis and then add in the traumas we all have faced during our lives, our spines lose some of the normal motion when they go out of alignment.  Without proper maintenence, the bones and discs begin to wear out.  When I see people's spines, they only have the arthritis in the areas of the subluxations.  The other areas still look healthy.  In order to stop the process or at least slow it down the best thing to do is to restore the proper function to the spine.  That brings things back to me.  I will be going to a  foot and ankle specialist in Philly to help restore some of the motion and function.  Now this guy is a surgeon and due to the damage to my leg, this is what is needed.  It is my hope and prayers for all reading this that you don't wait till you need invasive procedures to help you get well.  That is where we come in. We can help you even if you think no one can and you have been to "everybody else".  If you haven't tried us, you haven't tried everybody.  I am feeling better than I have in the past 3 1/2 years and continue to make progress.  I have come a long way and still have some to go yet but now that the bone has healed, I can see the light at the end of the very long tunnel.  Please see below the 2009 schedule of free seminars At Main Street.  They are open to the public and you can bring as many guests as you like.  We ask that you let us know about your attendance as space is limited.  I look forward to seeing you soon.

I am excited to report that we are always striving to bring you the latest information on all the hottest health topics.  As such we have updated our standard workshops and added some new ones.  For 2009 we have The Five Secrets to: Permanent Weight Loss, Looking and feeling Younger and Preventing and Improving Type II Diabetes.  These are 3 different seminars.  We also have Balancing Your Hormones Naturally and Save Your Family's Life.  As always, large part of what we do is to educate the community as th what they can do naturally and proactively so that they may make informed decisions about their heath.  I have found over the past 21 years in practice that Sy Sims is right.  The educated consumer makes the best "patient".  The more you know about health, the healthier you will be.  The seminars are informative, researched and fun.  They make you think and often times you can start to use the information immediately.  So here goes... yes I know,  you have to scroll down but, I know you will find some interesting reads along the way. It will be worth the time to get to the workshop schedule.  I have updated the seminars with the latest information for you.

Bulletin Board

 June 25, 2008

Can you believe it?  Here we are, half way thru the year  already.  Time is going by so quickly.  Have you looked back on your New Year's resolutions lately?  Perhaps taking better care of your health was on that list.  If not, it is not too late to add it to your list of goals for this year.  If you start now you could be doing a lot better by 2009.  I say this no matter what your present level of health because "You don't have to be sick to get better".  Your health is always a work in progress.  If you are not proactively taking steps to improve your health then you are rolling the dice, gambling on what your quality of life will be.  Are you willing or even able to accept the consequences?  Now is the time to empower yourself and take the first step in having a healthier life.

I am not really sure what it is but, there is something special going on at MSC right now.  We have been experiencing an abundance of new families coming in for care.  And we have room for more.  It seems the word is out about how for the first time in 3 years Main Street Chiropractic is undergoing a renaissance.  We are having more fun and the staff is performing like a championship team providing silver tray service to all our patients while they are getting the most vital component of health care.  Dr. Heidi is well into her second year at MSC and has really made a huge impact on all of our lives.  We are fortunate to have her expertise and everyone knows how much she cares.  There hasn't been a better time to schedule a free health screening for you and your family than right now to see if chiropractic care can change your life.  No drugs, no surgeries just good old fashioned, American chiropractic care.

July 4th is just around the corner.  With all the excitement of the holiday and changes in people's schedules from the school year to the summer, it is just as important to take care of your health.  Make sure you have checked in with Brittany on any schedule changes so that we may continue to provide you with the very best chiropractic care.  Next week, 6/30 we will have something special for every family so that you may have something sweet for the holiday.

June 17,  WOW what a day yesterday was.  Patient Appreciation Day!!!!  There was lots of food, fun, prizes, gifts and children getting checked for subluxations.  In all there were 11 kids who learned that health comes from within and that in order to be healthy, we must be proactive about it.  If we take care of it now it will take care of us later.  I want to thenk the entire team here at MSC for putting together a great day and everyone of our patients who put their faith and trust in us to take care of their children.  We also want to thank everyone of our patients who told their loved ones, friends neighbors and others about our special day and the power of getting checked eventhough they may not have been able to come in yesterday.  There is still plenty of food left over so come on in today and experience some of what went on yesterday because the party is still going on today.

OK, here it is.  The news is that the non-union has finally healed.  That means that after 3 years, I know I get to keep my leg.  The new bone is now the area of interest.  It still has not fully ossified (hardened).  So, that means that I am in the brace for at least another 4 months.  I really thought that I would wake up from the surgery and have the frame off.  I have to tell you though, I am not sure how I am going to feel without it.  It has been so long it feels like a part of me.  Well since it is screwed into my leg, I guess it is a part of me.  At least when it comes off I get to lose about 10 pounds.  So that is where I am for now.  Great news, just  a little more time.

I am using green today because of the great natural way so many patients have been responding to the nutritional supplements they have been taking since we started the new addition in our arsenal of ways to take back your health and keep you that way.  I have heard that patients are reporting more energy, better sleep, less aches and pains and a general sense of well being.  I am so very happy that people are responding in such a favorable manner.  I mean, I expected great results, just not as quickly as is being reported.  It just goes to show how much proper nutrition has an impact on your health.  Nutrition is such an intergal part of getting and staying healthy.  I cna't emphasize it enough.  Please call us today to find out what youe nutritional needs are so we can help you fuel your body with the good stuff it needs to be strong.

May 30th

We have been having beautiful weather lately.  As it gets warmer, there are high expectations of the end of school andthe anticipation of summer.  At Main Street we are all excited about this change of season as well.  Along those lines, we all go thru our closets and bring out the summer clothes.  We have decided to have some fun with it in the office. We know that the greatest compliment that you give us is the referrals of others.  It reminds us that you have the faith, trust and confidence in us to be able to take care of others who you care about.  We would like to be able to return the favor.  During the warmer months, the staff has decided to help out out patients by referring people to your businesses.  Here's how we are doing it. We will wear your T shirts for a week so that all our patients may become aware of your products and or services. Just let any staff member know you are interested and we wil give you our shirt sizes and we will wear your shirts for the week.  We also have a bulletin board in our entry way for business cards and flyers for our patients.  The latest addition to promoting your business is this website.  We are adding a page for you to showcase coupons/discounts or descriptions of your businesses on our site and links to your sites to make you more visible to others who are like minded and health conscious.

This weekend we will be at the GRAND OPENING of the newest Acme shopping center in Limerick on  Ridge Pike.  We will be doing health screenings and free chair massages.  There will be a gift to the first 100 people who visit us.  This is a great opportunity to bring people youcare about in your lives who have been hesitant to come in but you know they could benefit from getting checked in our office.  They will be able to ask me questions about their health and get a free posture/health evaluation in just a few minutes.  Come on out change a loved one's life, get a free gift and have a lot of fun.

Dad's Day is just around the corner.  In honor and recognition of what a blessing it is to be a father, we are giving away a golf caddy.  It is a piece of furniture where dad can keep all his golf equipment from the bag to the shoes all in one place.  enhancing your golf experience.  Ask the team how you can win this great gift.

May 20th  NEWS FLASH!!!

The FIbromyalgia workshop has been rescheduled for Tuesday June 3rd.  There will be information packet handouts for every attendee with all the material from the talk so that you may refer back to it at anytime or pass it on to someone who you know has Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that was unable to attend.  Feel free to bring as many guests to the workshop as you like.  We always have room for more.

We will be having a Father's Day event in the office and we are looking to make the Thursday and Friday before Dad's day a very sweet one. There will be a golf caddy that some lucky person will be taking home. We will also be having something special for every family Fourth of July week.  The whole team gets together at least once a week to come up with exciting ideas.  As such, we welcome your sugestions as to how we can make things more fun for us all.

May 17th, 2008

The day has finally arrived!!! June 4th the frame is to be removed.  I will be going back to Hanemann hospital where it all began June 24th of 2005.  Holy smokes!  How fast 3 years has gone.  While I am under twilight sleep, the doc will test the 2 areas of my leg to determine what will need to be done next.  I will probably need a cast or I will be back in a walking boot.  The purpose will be to allow more stress to be put on the new bone so that it may continue to harden.  The frame has served its purpose in docking the non-union and lengthening the leg however, in its efficiency, it has not allowed enough force down the shaft of the bone and therefore the new bone has not been able to fully ossify.  There is still more to be done but, having the frame off my leg is the next big step in my recovery.  I should be able to get somewhat of an idea of how my leg will work when the screws and wires are gone.  I will be about 10 pounds lighter too.  I will keep the frame and maybe have it mounted in the office for posterity.

May 10, 2008

 Hello everybody,

It has been a very long time since I last communicated with you.  There has been a lot going on in and out of Main Street.  We have been travelling all over the Perkiomen Valley doing preventative health screenings and talks on health and wellness to all sorts of businesses.  Lowes, the Colonnade, the Goddard Schools and SEI are just a few.  It is all a part of spreading the truth about what health really is.  There are so many people that are still dealing with all types of health ailments from headaches and low back pain to reproductive problems, digestive problems and many others, that don't necessarily have to keep on suffering.  They just don't know it.  There are answers and we may have them.  I want to thank all of you who have taken it as your responsibility to tell others about Chiropractic so that they too may be able to experience life changing events for their health.  It is through your efforts, care and concern for your family, friends and everyone you know that we have been able to help so many people outside our reaches with their struggles.  There is no greater gift.

As far as my leg goes, there have been a lot of struggles.  What else is new?  First of all, the frame which I have had on for 1 1/2 years now, can you believe it?, is not allowing enough stress to go on the bone.  As many of you know, bone changes according to stress.  Sedentary lifestyles leads to weakening of the bones (osteoporosis) and active lifestyles leads to strong bones. Misaligned vertebrae put undue stress on the bones which leads to arthritis.  As such the new bone is not hardening like everyone had hoped.  The doc in NYC is suggesting a treatment that I don't agree with and so it is time to move on.  I will be coming back to Philly, just like Rocky in the last installment of Stallone's saga of the boxer, and finishing up my recovery with the doc that helped me the first day of my accident June 25, 2005 so that I too may be able to run up the Art Museum's steps in victory.  With the srping and warmer weather, I have a renewed sense of hope that I will be soon back onthe adjusting floor laying my hands on as many people as possible.  I really miss adjusting and correcting spines and watching life come back to everyone who gives it the chance.  It is my miracle that I get to see everyday.  I have  a lot of catching up to do and I am rested and ready.

Things have been going great in the office.  Denise, who remained on after Dr. Todd left to be closer to his son in Delaware, remains a staunch defender of chirpractic and puts her heart and soul into helping familys to gain better health thru natural chiropractic care.  Brittany, our newest addition to the practice has already experienced the powers of chiropractic for herself and seen the incredible results many of you have already achieved. She is on a mission to do whatever she can to help you too.  Gayle, who has been with Main Street since 3 months before the accident has been with us on this ever changing journey.  She has seen it all.  Penny has moved into the area of helping us teach people about health and healing by getting us in front of many businesses, organizations and schools and as a result we have been seen by hundreds of people of all ages we otherwise may not have been able to reach.  Dr. Heidi has done great things in her first year with Main Street.  In fact she has done things that some docs 20 years in practice will never do.  She really has taken on patient care whit all her heart and soul and everyone is so happy with her.  I wonder if I will be welcomed back????  We have so many things scheduled for the rest of this year.  Some new events and some we are bringing back that patients have asked for. I am also very proud of the spinal workshop schedule we have designed according to your survey input last year. You can refer to the calendar of events on a different part of the website.  Please use everything we offer you for yourselves, families and friends so that together we can make the Perkiimen Valley the healthiest in Pa.

  Yours in health,

 Doc Steve

We just completed our events calendar for 2008.  Please see the one hanging across from the front desk.  We have a lot of exciting things going on inside the office and out in the community.  We hope to see you having fun with Main Street Chiropractic in 2008.  If you would like the doctors to come to your business, organization, civic club or group, just ask anyone and we will be happy to schedule a date and time.  Dr. Steve has been doing talks for the past 20 years and it is one of his favorite parts of being a chiropractor.  Telling the truth about health and healing is the first step in changing people's lives.  If you are interested in having one of the docs speak, scroll down to see some of the topics available.  If there is something you don't see, we can customize a workshop especially for you.

Woe is me.  My Miami Dolphins just went down the the Eagles to have an 0-10 record.  Not their best season.  I hope you are all looking forward to the holiday season.  For me it really is a time to reflect on everything that has gone on this year and a time to count out blessings.  Yes, all have a lot to be thankful of.  If we would take the time to sit down and write out allt he good things we have had go our way this year compard to the struggles, I am sure most of us could see that there was much more good than bad.

I had to reschedule my last appointment with the orthopedist this past Wednesday.  I just wasn't feeling up to the drive to North Jersey.  It is rescheduled for 11/28.  It is at that time I hope the doc will be able to decisively tell me that the frame can come off the first week of the New Year.  TIme will tell.  I will keep you posted.  For the rest of this year there is big doings at Main Street.  Wer will be revisiting our 12 Days of Christmas celebration.  Every time you keep your regularly scheduled appointment in the office statring after Thanksgiving you will be given a raffle ticket.  If you keep all your appts. for the week, you will get a few more.  Bring a friend to a spinal workshop (the last one of the year is on power stretching, it is a really good one on how to reduce the stress of theholidays and to prevent injuries while shovelling snow) and get a few more tickets.  If you refer a person you will get a bunch of tickets.  Then starting I believe the 5th of Dec., we will be picking out one ticket per day and awarding gifts leading up to the 20th of Dec where we will have our annual Main Street Chiropractic Christmas party where we will open all the presents that everyone has won and we will be taking pictures with Santa.  It is always a fun time in the office.  Please see the staff for details.  We are also excited about our new additions to our team.  Brittany is at the front desk and she is always preparde to help you with all your needs.  Cindy is our new tech chiropractic assistant and she will be the master of the BSE's (biostructural exams), x-ray set ups, cervical tractioning and rehab.  They are both great people with big hearts and they want for you and your familes to have the best of health.  I am really looking forward to getting back in the game in 2008.  I have been watching from the sidelines for too long.  I am so close to being on the floor adjusting again.  I am excited about the prospect of adjusting along side Dr. Heidi.

I am hoping that we will be able to have a guest speaker at MSC before the New Year.  He will be speaking on nutrition and supplements.  We had you fill out a survey about your history with supplements.  Thank you for your time in answering the questions.  As such we will have him talk about your options and following the nutrition workshop, he will be doing the testing.  Please look for information in the office and on this site for further info.  We afre very excited about this special event.  I have personally been using the products he will be talking about for my health and the success of thehealing of my leg and I have had great results.  I know you can too.

October 24, 2007

Holy smoke!  We have had so many new families coming to Main Street Chiropractic this month.  You probably have noticed it in the adjusting room.  More moms and dads and lots of children all striving towards a lifetime of better health and wellness.  We couldn't have done it without you.  That's right, it has been largely due to you our practice members who get the big idea about what chiropractic is and can do for people.  You have been telling your family, friends, coworkers,  neighbors and everyone else you meet about chiropractic and Main Street and we thank you so very much.  It is because of you and your efforts that we are becoming a healthier community.  You are doing great things.  As always there are so many things we have to offer.  The bi-monthly spinal workshops (see updated 2008 calendar below) have been updated to give you the latest information about many different topics on health.  We added new topics and tweaked our older topics from the results of our patient survey.  You asked for it, you got it.  These are free workshops and open to everyone.  They start at 6:30 sharp and are 30-45 minutes.  We always offer complimentary preventive health screenings for people who aren't sure chiropractic is for them and don't want to risk a financial commitment.  We also provide many types of community service to schools, businesses and community/civic organizations ranging from outside workshops, health screenings ergonomic studies and many others. Mention this website to everyone you know.  I am so very proud of it and I really like the chiropractic slide show and history sections.  We need your help to help more people.  You can have a big impact on the lives of those closest to you.  I ask this of you because I can't possibly do this on my own.  We live in a time where the greatest country in the world is ranked at or near the bottom of every category of health according th the World Health Organization.  I believe we are 29th out of 32 developed nations.  This is the true health crisis.  Believe me, it is not that there is not enough money.  Truth be told, the US population spends more on health care per person than any other country.  So why are we so sick?  Great question.  It is because we follow a reactionary model of health.  We wait till we get so sick before we do anything about it.  Unfortunately, then it is too late.  If we would follow a more proactive model where we put forth just a little effort to stay healthy rather than wait for symptoms to show, then we would be a lot better off.  This is what the true value and benefit of chiropractic is.  Call today to see if chiropractic can help you and your family.  Tell others.  It could be the greatest gift you give to someone.  Turn someone on to chiropractic today.

We are gearing up for the holiday season.  As the weather changes and the stress this time of year brings can be very hard on our immune systems and our bodies in general.  It is very important to make sure you are in "fighting shape" as my father-in-law says in order to stay healthy.  We are here for you.  Find out how you can insure the health of you and your family this winter.  It doesn't take much but, the rewards are tremendous.

I look forward to seeing you this joyous season.  You have given me so much strength and determination to get well.  The time is getting closer every day.  Watch out when I get back.  I am going to be on fire.  My hands ache to be correcting subluxations again and helping people to live their lives to the greatest potential.

Boy oh boy, we are rockin'  This month (September) we are all over the place.  Last weekend, we were at Limerick Days.  Let me tell you I think it was the most successful one yet.  We had a chance to tell so many people the truth about health and wellness.  The response was overwhelming.  As a result our office has been filled with new patients seeking better answers for their health concerns. Already we have seen tremendous results in just a few short days, as more and more families are able to get off their medications and allow their body to heal the natural way without drugs or surgeries.

This weekend Saturday Sept. 15th, we will once again be at Trappe Days at Waterworks Park.  This is a great event held right in our backyard. The past years have been a lot of fun enabling us to reach out to our immediate community.  We will be performing postural screenings and weight balance checks.  The weight balance checks are very interesting and informative.  The bilateral scales show whether a person's weight is equal down both legs (a normal finding).  Often times, when a person's weight is off from one side to another by as little as 5 pounds, we have found that this is an indication for further evaluation by a Doctor of Chiropractic.  The weight scale imbalance could be a sign that all is not well with your spine which is the window to your health.  Do you know which of your legs is heavier???

This past Tuesday night we had another of our Dinner workshops.  Ther were over 25 guests in attendance.  It was an evening filled with valuable health information, great food by the Lakeside Inn and friendship.  If you are interested in coming to one of these fantastic dinners, please contact Penny our patient care specialist to reserve your seat for the next one in November.

We are all very excited to be getting out to the community to meet as many people as possible to tell them the benefits of chiropractic care and how it can change their lives.  It is our goal to change this community to make it the healthiest one in the great state of Pennsyvania.  By educating people and doing these community services we will do it one day.  Be sure to stop by our booth, let us know you saw us on the website and take just a few moments to get yourself checked.  It could be the most important thing you do for you and your family's health now and in the future.  We would love to meet you too.

Latest Update on my leg follows the Sept update below.

   UPDATE:  September 13th

OK here is the latest information in the continuing saga of Dr. Steve's amazing leg.  In August, I had another visit with the orthopedist in Manhattan.  I must digress here.  I am a big fan of the Jason Bourne movies.  I have read all the Bourne books by  Robert Ludlum, the one by Eric Van Lustbader and I am in the middle of his latest "The Bourne Betrayal".  Upon viewing the recent blockbuster The Bourne Ultimatum, I noticed at the end the final chase scene takes place in New York City right by the hopsital.  In fact, the long shot of the building is The Hospital for Special Surgeries where I go for my post-op visits.  If you look ery carefully, you can see the name on the building.  That is so cool.  I love the movies.  Ok back to my leg.  This visit was supposed to be when my next surgery was scheduled. Given my condition since the last one in May for the limb lengthening and considering that I have already been through about 17 or so surgical procedures, Lynn my wife keeps track, I decided to forego the next one and keep the frame on.  I figure that the plate was something they had started doing not too long ago and before that they used the frame already in place so, that would be good enough for me.  I finally started to feel like my old self again.  My energy levels were up, the pain I had for months started to subside slightly, the muscle spasms were less frequent and I didn't want to go back to that again.  The doc agreed that would be an acceptable course of action so here we are.  I am still on the antibiotic daily for the osteomyelitis (for those of you new to the saga, ostelmyelitis is a potentially very serious infection of the bone) as well as pain medications.  I am at physical therapy for roughly 2 hours 3x/week.  One hour is on land and the other is in the pool.  These sessions are very painful and often very discouraging as one day I may have a good session but the next 3 may be a struggle due to increases of pain or muscle spams.  I must press on though.  There are plenty of people out there that have it more difficult than I do.  The greatest thing is that I have my mind and a great support system.  My wife and 2 sons are primarily what drives me to get better.  Then add on the fact that I so desperately want to get back in the game of adjusting as many families especially the kids as possible.  I really do love chiropractic and what it has done for me and the miracles I have seen over the past 19 years.  Yes, this September marks 19 years in practice.  Even I can't believe it.  It has been a great ride so far and there are so many more people I want to help.  I am so blessed to have found chiropractic that is not a job to me it is my life's passion and desire to be able to help people who need it.  I really do love it and I feel it is one of my biggest losses of this accident, besides the affect on my family, that I am so loooking forward to the day I can adjust again.  The journey continues, 27 months and counting...

 UPDATE: October 23, 2007

Alright, alright.  The doc says I have been successful in attaining 58 mm of length of new bone.  Hooray!  This means that both legs are now the same length (very important especially for the spine)  He also says that the leg is aligned properly.  Now the waiting game.  Last visit he said I needed to let the new bone "cook" for approximately 3 months.  This means that the new bone is still soft and that it needs more time to fully calcify (harden) before I can start putting weight on my leg without the external fixator.  So, I am looking at around December/January to have what I hope to be my last surgery.  This one is simple.  I won't even need anesthesia,  I Should be in and out of the hospital in the same day.  The end of this part of the journey is coming to an end.  I won't know what to do without anymore surgeries.  I have been told that now my schedule will be filled with physical therapy.  I am presetly doing pt 2x/week just to keep things from getting to far behind.  The frame restricts movement at both my ankle and knee. So, the pt I am doing keeps as much moting and function as possible so that when the fixator is removed, I won't have more work to do than necessary.  Let me tell you the work I am doing now is very painful.  I can't imagine how difficult it is going to be when they can do all they can.  Muscles and ligaments which have not been used in 2 1/2 years need to be strengthened and retrained to be able to deal with me walking again.  Can you believe it?  I am talking about walking.  The other day I saw one of our younger patients walking around with his dad bent over providing his 2 index fingers as support for his son.  As parents, we have all done this.  Thank goodness for chiropractors!  As I was watching this little boy's gait, I wondered how mine will be and how much it will affect my posture and spine.  I am also looking forward to seeing my x-rays.  I haven't been able to get a good biomechanical picture of my spine since the accident.  I am curious to see what effect the accident had on my spine.  26 years of maintenence and wellness saved my life now to get put back in alignment again. Hummmm...  Thank goodness to Dr. Heidi for the great adjustments I will be getting and the rest of my team for the rehab and traction.  I may soon be next to you on the traction chairs. It is also that much closer to being able to be on the floor doing what I love to do again, adjusting.  This has been one of the tradegies of the accident.  Being unable to adjust and having to watch from the sidelines has been difficult to say the least.   I know now there is nothing else I would rather be doing or that gives me great joy than being a chiropractor.  I have seen so many people's lives change over the past 20 (can you believe it) years.  I am blessed to be in this great profession.  I am fortunate for the opportunity and privledge to have so many people have their faith and confidence (sometimes earned more than others) in me and my team to help them and their children to have healthier lives.  I am looking forward to the next challenge of pt so that I may "Get back to where I once belonged".

UPDATE: JULY 14, 2007

Dear patients and friends,

Once again it has been entirely too long.  Those of you who have had glimpses of me since the last surgery of May 8th know why I have been absent for those of you who don`t, well, here we go.  With the continuing saga of the healing of Dr. Steve, the purpose of the last surgery was limb lengthening.  As a result of the healing of the multiple fractures and the compression of the non-union, I had lost about 2 inches of length on my left leg.  The surgery in May was to regain that loss.  A 2 inch difference in leg length would cause a huge imbalance in my gait and as you could imagine, would really throw off my posture.   Since posture is the window to the spine and bad posture represents subluxations and subluxations lead to poor health, I wanted nothing to do with a short leg. I had worked to hard and long over the past 26 years to have a great spine and nervous system to insure the highest level of health, that I would go for this next procedure.  After all, the surgery in December to help the non-union wasn`t so bad...

The lenghtening procedure went well.  For the faint of heart, sorry for the next few sentences.  The procedure consisted of the surgeon drilling 2 holes thru good healthy bone then he chiseled thru the holes as starting points in order to create a fracture.  Next, was the addition of another level of the Iliazarov-Taylor spatial frame ( fancy name for the external fixator I have on).  The surgery went well, only an hour and a half.  That`s when the fun began.  The morphine did not help with the pain, in fact it took 2 days before the pain mangaement docs could figure out the correct medications that would give me some relief.  One of the meds gave me such terrrible heart burn.  I had never had  heart burn before, now I can really relate to people with that horrible condition along with reflux and esophagitis, boy did that hurt.  So the doc naturally wanted to help me with the discomfort of the heartburn (remember a side effect from a medication) by giving me mylanta.  My first reaction was instead of masking the sympoms with yet another drug, why not take me off the med that was causing me great discomfort and find one that wouldn`t.  He was dumbfounded at the idea at first and then realized the sanity of my suggestion.  The stay in the hospital was unbearable. With the pain, I was unable to sleep.  I really felt horrible.  Finally they figured out the proper meds ( they decided that since I had so much success with the pain killers I was taking after the last surgery, that maybe they should try the same ones again, imagine that.  By the way, it was my suggestion again)  This is one of the reasons we educate people about their health.  The more educated the better health decisions we all can make.  After all, we are the one`s utlimately responsible of our health.

Ah, the comforts of a familiar setting, home.  Even being around my family couldn`t help with the pain.  Constant and unrelenting.  The doctor had said that everyone responds differently to the lengthening procedure some feel fine, some have discomfort...well, I never imagined that I would be in so much pain.  After all, I was walking around with a broken leg for 6 months and I had no pain at all.  Besides, I was very healthy, eating right, taking vitamins, minerals and Omega 3 fatty acids.  I had been going to the gym before the surgery to get in shape again so that my recovery would be swift.  Not so.  Back to the sleepless nights, I was averaging 20 minutes at a time only out of sheer exhaustion for a total of 4 hours/day.  Since I had the surgery in New York and prescription laws differ from state to state, I was unable to get the exact meds I had before.  Instead of extended release pain meds (where the drugs is released in your body over 12 hours), I was on them every 4 hours.  The intense release of the meds caused terrible mood swings, loss of concentration and an over all lousy feeling.  I was doped up, wasted and it didn`t feel good at all.  I don`t know how people get hooked on that stuff.  It was really bad.

Now, every day I had to "adjust" the new struts, six of them 3/4 millimeter per day to lengthen the leg.  No biggie, the approximation of the non-union was a piece of cake.  This should be the same.  Ha ha.  What the doc didn`t tell me was that while the bone has no problem growing at that rate, the muscles and tendons can`t keep up at that rate.  So every day the muscles would be as sore as getting hit by a Mack truck.  Life hadn`t been this miserable since the early times after the accident 2 years (yes it has been that long) ago.  Did I make the wrong decision?  Should I have just amputated, just amputated?  What was I thinking?  That`s just it, I was thinking "Anything but this".  I had come so far and endured so much why all this suffering again?  Not only that, but I really needed to be back in the office.  It was really doing me good to be able to see all of you and give me that extra incentive to get well as quickly as possible. I need to could get back in the game, to start contributing, doing what I love, what I was blessed to be able to do.  I miss adjusting and helping people get well.  Especially the kids.

Every 2 weeks I go to New York City to get X-rays.  It is really amazing, the power of the body to heal.  I have seen it thousands of times in my 19 year chiropractic career, seeing peoples` symptoms go away and watching their postures and spines being restored to normal.  I really have to tell you it has reached a new level for me.  Being able to see the gap enlarge from one x-ray to the next and seeing the length come back to my leg.  It is very encouraging.. May be this stuff will work and I will be adjusting again by New Year`s.  Of course I have started rehab.  What fun!  I must say that the people at the Spring Valley Y branch of Phoenixville Hospital Rehab are great.  Shaun has worked with people who have had the same fixator on that I do and he knows what he is doing.  If there is a relationship between the pain and the results, I should be running marathons when I get well.  Holy smokes does therapy hurt.  Two years worth of scar tissue, adhesions, muscle disuse atrophy, what a mess.  It pays to take care of your health.  Accidents are one thing but losing your health due to poor habits will really come back to haunt you.  I really need a lot of work.  Always up for a challenge, even a battle, I welcomed the task in front of me.  I could do this.  I could rebuild myself, or so I thought.  During a P.T. session in the pool, I was given a new exercise to do.  Just going up and down one step with my damaged leg.  Simple, I could do it.  Just one step.  Well, I stepped up with my bad leg and extended it to get me off the ground with a some expected pain but, when I went to step down, I couldn`t get my leg to do it.  My leg, the one I have had my whole life.  We had taken so many steps together and now it couldn`t do even ONE.  It was at that point that I realized just how big a challenge I had infront of me.  I have got to say it was discouraging.  All alone in the pool, I thought "I have got to do this.  There is so much more I have to do.  So many more people I have to help.  I have got to get back to my office, my staff, my patients and my community that I made a commitment to so many years ago.

I am currently half way to the 2 inches.  While impressive, a one inch gap between my bone sure does make you think.  By the first week of August, I should have the entire 2 inches made up.  Any adjustments to the leg will be made at that time and my next and hopefully last surgery will be scheduled for sometime in Aug-Sept.  I want to say again how much I appreciate your continued smiles, words, cards and prayers.  Untill I had been in this situation, it was impossible for me to realize how strong an impact those simple acts could have on a person.  It means the world and keeps me going.  I know how blessed I am to have so many great people standing by me through this very long recovery period and I could never thank you enough.  I know the end of this journey in my life is near and I look forward to when I can get back on the adjusting floor and get that healing magic going again.

  Yours in health,

   Doc Steve

Dear patients and friends,

It has been long journey for me since the motorcycle accident of June 25, 2005 that almost cost me my leg but, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger and brighter. May 8th I will be having the limb lenghtening surgery to get back the 2 inches lost due to the healing process. The orthopedist will cut through the top of my tibia (shin bone) and add a second level to the exsisting external fixator I have on now. Then with a series of "adjustments" I will increase the distance between the new "break" thereby lengthening the bone. I have been told the procedure will take about 1 1/2 hours and I should be in the hospital for 2 days (so says the doctor) but that remains to be seen. I am very much looking forward to this next procedure, can you believe what I am saying? I am looking forward to a surgical procedure... but, I will have the frame on for 3 months for the actual lengthening and then sometime around August or September it will come off with a final (about my 17th) surgery. At that point the rehab will begin. It is my goal to be on the adjusting floor by December 25th of this year. Rehab will of course take at least one year but, I should be able to start adjusting in some capacity by the holidays. That will be my grreatest gift. Isn`t the body an incredible machine? It has the ability to heal from the most devastating circumstances when it is healthy.

So very few people are ever in the situation where their patients have been an inspiration and provided support for their doctors. It is usually the other way around. For the past two years, I have found strength, support, good will, gifts, compassion, sympathy, empathy and probably most important, prayers from you for me to get well. I will be forever grateful for everything you have done for me. It is my goal and desire to continue my growth to be a better doctor and person to benefit you your families and the community by giving back by being the best chiropractor. There are those of you who have experienced adjustments by so many different chiropractors who out of the goodness of their hearts took time away from their practices to cover for me in my time of need. I am truly grateful that you had the faith trust and confidence in me and my team to continue to provide you with the very best chiropractic care regardless of the doctor. I also feel that you have been fortunate to have been "touched" by so many talented and caring chiropractors. Each one of them is special and brings a little something different to help you with your health.

I am always looking to provide the very best to you. As such I am so very proud of our new website. If you are seeing this, you already know about it. There is so much information about chiropractic, articles, research, chiropractic history and philosophy. I love this website. We also have this bulletin board where you can find out what is going on at Main Street and upcoming events. Go to the testimonial section and tell your story about your experience with chiropractic. Testimonials are a big help to others who are unaware of the benefits of care and the problems it can help. Most of all PLEASE tell EVERYONE you know about this site. Help us help your friends and loved ones. Spread the word today.

It is teriffic being in the office seeing everyone. I am so very anxious to get back to adjusting. I know I am closer to that. December is just around the corner. I know, I will enjoy the Spring, Summer and Fall first but, man to adjust again...

Yours in health,

Doc Steve

All workshops are held at MSC  (Main Street Chiropractic) on Wednesdays From 6:30pm sharp till 7/7:30

Seating is limited, call to reserve your seat.  Bring your friends especially those who may be suffering needlessly and worse yet, taking dangerous drugs simply to cover up the symptoms while allowing the cause to get worse.

Due to our never ending efforts to serve our community better, we are always looking at other businesses who really seem to have it going on.  Last Thursday, the MSC team went to Five Guys Burgers and Fries in the Gateway Shopping Center in Devon.  We had heard how great the food is, how it is all made to order and especially how well the team behind the counter works together.  Upon entering, all we could see on the walls were atricles of how great the company was.  It was quite impressive.  We were all amazed at how each team member took responsibility for their respective posts and covered for each other when the circumstances required.  They were flawless in their execution and were able to serve so many hungry customers with ease.  The food was great, the place was clean, neat and all the condiments were in full supply.  Overall, our general consensus was we could learn from them and we will strive to follow their example of excellence.  It is our goal for  our patients experience excitement and joy every time you visit us.

What is a subluxation?

The word "subluxation" comes from the Latin words meaning "to dislocate" (luxate) and "somewhat or slightly" (sub). A subluxation means a slight dislocation (misalignment) or biomechanical malfunctioning of the vertebrae (bones of the spine). These disturbances may irritate nerve roots and blood vessels which branch off from the spinal cord between each of the vertebrae. This irritation may cause pain and dysfunction in muscle, lymphatic and organ tissue as well as imbalance in the normal body processes.
